Red light
works to restore injured cells to a normal level in both structure and function. Energy is absorbed superficially, making it ideal for superficial scar tissue. Energy is also transferred into the blood stream essentially going where it is required acting on damaged cells in a response similar to a vitamin. It effects sebum secretion of sebaceous glands changing its action as well as reducing inflammation. Symptoms such as swelling, redness and damaged skin may be alleviated without heat or discomfort. Low Level Laser promotes regeneration to the damaged tissue, by encouraging cellular renewal, collagen and elastin growth. Lymphatic drainage is improved and the damaged areas will become stronger. This therapy can be used anywhere on the body. Any injured cell can be treated including inflammatory skin conditions such as rosacea, psoriasis and acne can all benefit from this treatment.

There are some case studies demonstrating improvement with red light in keloid scars that have occurred from CO2 laser usage.

Blue Light The redness and swelling that can occur with acne is caused by a type of bacteria called Propionibacterium Acnes that can be killed by exposing skin to different types of light. The laser excites the compounds that bacteria produce (porphyrins) damaging the bacterial cell wall effectively killing the bacteria. A recent 10 yearlong study in Leeds has found that half the acne sufferers in Britain no longer respond to antibiotics for acne due to mutated bacteria. Bacterial resistance to antibiotics has also occurred which does not occur with blue light therapy. It is also believed that the light therapy generates oxygen that the bacteria are chemically sensitive to, causing the bacteria to die. This makes blue light therapy a very simple, painless and highly effective treatment.

Near infra-red light promotes healing by reaching deeper into the tissue, acting on the mitochondria, the power houses of our cells. The energy absorbed by the mitochondria stimulates the release of Cytochrome C Oxidase and Adenosine Triphosphate. These are the two key elements in the healing process. This wavelength is also ideal for the lymphatic system and acupuncture points. “So far, what we’ve seen in patients and what we’ve seen in laboratory cell cultures, all point to one conclusion,” said Dr Harry Whelan, Professor of Paediatric Neurology and director of hyperbaric medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin. “The near-infrared light emitted by these LEDs seems to be perfect for increasing energy inside cells. This means whether you’re on Earth in a hospital, working in a submarine under the sea or on your way to Mars inside a spaceship, the LEDs boost energy to the cells and accelerate healing.”
